The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the heart of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-based evaporator cabinet goes in a utility space, a closet, or an attic, and the evaporator coil mounts directly on top of it. Together these two units do the mechanical work of the system.
